Elegant pair of Art Deco bookends, attributed to the Viennese sculptor Josef Lorenzl (1892–1950), one of the undisputed masters of decorative figurines from the interwar period. Circa 1925.
Each bookend consists of a veined green onyx base, topped with a polychrome bronze and Paris ivory (resin) figure, using the chryselephantine technique characteristic of the Art Deco style. The slender silhouette, with fluid lines and a graceful pose, is typical of Lorenzl's formal vocabulary.
Very good condition. Original patina and polychromy preserved.
