Antique 2-gallon jug from Montreal merchant, John Cassidy. It dates from between 1870 and 1900. It is decorated with a cobalt blue painted flower.
Stoneware merchant jugs were decorated in this way mainly for technical and aesthetic reasons. Cobalt blue was one of the few pigments capable of withstanding the high firing temperatures required for salt-glazed stoneware.
The history of the Cassidy house dates back to 1801 when Louis Renaud founded a manufacturing and import firm for crockery under the name Renaud et Cie. Around 1830, John-Louis Cassidy, of Irish origin, partnered with Louis Renaud to form the firm Renaud & Cassidy. The partnership lasted until 1865, when Louis Renaud retired.
The business was then reorganized under the name John L. Cassidy & Co. In 1870, the company rented two stores located on Saint-Paul Street and belonging to the Hospitalières de Saint-Joseph sisters.
This jug has small chips on the rim of its neck.
