Jean Paul Riopelle (1923–2002) est l'un des plus grands peintres canadiens du XXᵉ siècle et une figure majeure de l'art moderne. Né à Montréal, il étudie à l'École du meuble sous la direction de Paul-Émile Borduas et devient signataire du manifeste Refus global en 1948. Installé à Paris pendant plusieurs années, il acquiert une renommée internationale grâce à ses œuvres abstraites réalisées au couteau à palette, caractérisées par une matière riche et des couleurs éclatantes. Inspiré par les paysages, la faune et la nature canadienne, Riopelle a marqué l'histoire de l'art par son style gestuel unique. Ses œuvres sont aujourd'hui conservées dans les plus prestigieux musées et collections du monde.
