About Gustave Sherman
Gustave Sherman (1910–1984) was Canada's most famous high-end costume jewelry manufacturer. Founded in Montreal in 1947, his company G. Sherman & Co. became a North American benchmark for the exceptional quality of its rhinestone creations.
Style and success (1950s–1970s)
During the brand's golden age, Gustave Sherman established himself as the country's most renowned costume jeweler. His pieces were distinguished by:
- Settings with superior quality rhodium or gold plating.
- Sophisticated monochrome color harmonies or bold contrasts.
- Complex crystal cuts (navettes, elongated marquises) and highly sought-after figurative brooches.
- Obsessive attention to detail: each crystal was hand-set with prongs, unlike mass-produced glued items.
End of the company and legacy
Facing evolving trends and the massive influx of low-cost imported jewelry, the company began its decline in the 1970s before closing its doors in the early 1980s, shortly before its creator's death in 1984.
A family revival: Genna Sherman, the founder's granddaughter, relaunched a tribute brand under the name G. Sherman Jewels, extending the family legacy decades after the original company closed.
Today, jewelry bearing the Sherman brand is highly prized by enthusiasts and collectors worldwide.
