Viennese bronze inkwell

1,150.00$
Description
Superb bronze inkwell attributed to the Vienna school, depicting a partridge and its chicks. The foliage forming the base of the inkwell is patinated a slightly darker shade, providing a contrast to the birds. Inside, the inkwell is intact and bears the mark "Geschutzt," a German word indicating that the design is registered or protected. The numbers 1609 and 1024 are also present, possibly corresponding to registered mold numbers. This naturalistic scene demonstrates exceptional manufacturing quality, great attention to detail, and a remarkable finesse in the execution of the sculpture. Recalling the work of French animal sculptor Jules Moigniez, it is reasonable to believe that this piece originated from the production of the Viennese foundry of Franz Bergmann, which employed the country's best sculptors around 1900.
