Description
Magnificent plaster representing Sir Louis-Hippolyte La Fontaine (1807-1864). Produced in 1885 by sculptor Louis-Phillippe Hébert (1850-1917), this plaster was originally white and was later restored and repainted gold. Some chips are visible, revealing the material of the piece.
Louis-Hippolyte La Fontaine 1st Baronet La Fontaine of Montreal, born in Boucherville and died in Montreal, was a French-Canadian jurist, politician, and seigneury lord.
A lawyer and pamphleteer, he was initially close to the Parti Patriote and Louis-Joseph Papineau. Opposed to armed conflict, he broke with Papineau during the Rebellions of 1837. Leader of the Reform Party, he was Prime Minister of the United Province of Canada from 1842 to 1843, and then from 1848 to 1851. At only 34 years old at the time of his first appointment, he was the youngest French-Canadian to have held this position.
A major figure of the Union regime, Louis-Hippolyte La Fontaine is primarily known for being, along with Robert Baldwin, one of the instigators of responsible government in the United Province of Canada.
